The utilization of recycled waste is not the main focus of human life. Rather than using recycled waste, most people have muddied the water by using more unrecyclable materials such as plastic, Styrofoam, and other materials that have become trendy nowadays. Affordable jewelry nowadays comes from materials and processes that are not environmentally friendly.
Anthony Sutrisno is an alumnus of Parahyangan Catholic University who had the idea to utilize organic waste (especially seeds) to be made into jewelry. He collects the seeds from forests around Bandung. The International Relations Study Program alumnae of 1997 introduced the jewelry business he has had for the past five years to students of Parahyangan Catholic University in an event called “Alumni’s Talk” on the theme “Creative Sustainable Eco Business”. The fourth Alumni’s Talk was held on Wednesday (21/10) in the operation room of Parahyangan Catholic University.
The founder of Bumi Putih Spiritual Jewelry stated that creating jewelry made of seeds does not require design. One of the benefits of seed-based jewelry is that the texture or the surface contour of the jewelry is determined by the seeds themselves. The artistic value is naturally painted by nature and perfected by the craftsman. Not only letting nature design them, Anthony Sutrisno conducted research to study the spiritual values of seeds based on existing legends. To him being artistic is not only about playing music or becoming an artist/craftsman but also about “Learning to see the beauty of what we are doing”, he went on to explain.
The seeds used for making jewelry are cariuk, sengon, palem, kelapa ratu. Some of the most sought after jewelry are the kelapa ratu bracelet as big as a marble, and the saga seed necklace. Other than jewelry, Bumi Putih Spiritual Jewelry also makes ornaments and key chains such as key chains made of kluwek seed crafted to look like a cow bell.
The business he has managed for 5 years based on a unique idea has grown. Due to the high artistic and natural value, the jewelry that has vintage and traditional impressions is now worth a lot of money. The use of jewelry from environmentally friendly material will also support the human effort to keep the balance of the nature. “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”
