Students Of Mathematics Unpar Invite Us To Think ‘OUT OF THE BOX’

Students of the Mathematics Study Program of Parahyangan Catholic University have once again held a prestigious competition for Junior and Senior High School students of Java, Bali and Sumatera. The competition that took one year to prepare was entitled “Out of the box”.

“…. when students are given mathematical questions, they are trained to think creatively and discover solutions for the problems with multiple solutions. This is the primary reason for us to pick this theme,” according to Alexander Bhina as the Chairman of the committee of the Mathematics Competition 2015.

This competition started off with a preliminary round that was conducted online. On Friday (13/11),  students who made it through the previous round joined the quarter final; 33 junior high school groups followed a written selection at building 2, while 51 high school level participants were present  in building 9.

Bhima, the chairman of the community’s nickname, explained how participants of the final round have to enter three separate rooms. In the first room students were isolated, in the second room students did problem-solving in 30 minutes; and in the third room the participants presented their answer to the jury. The jurors were lecturers of the Mathematics Study Program of Parahyangan Catholic University.

“This is a good event to train the participants’ mentality. In addition, I can witness my son’s ability to compete.” According to Mr. Sugiono who accompanied his son, Edgar Sulaiman, a student of Santa Maria Cirebon.

While the competition was being held, the comittee also held a workshop that was open to the public especially teachers, lecturers and parents who accompanied their children. The workshop, that was held in the operation room, was conveyed by Aleams Barra as IMO (The International Mathematical Olympiad) Indonesia team leader.

After the final on (14/11), the participants who were declared winners are:

It should be admitted that this competition has not only given experience to its participants  but it has also served as an introduction for the Mathematics Study Program to its prospective students. According to Bhima, Mathematics will help us think logically and systematically. He hoped that the activity that brings pride to UNPAR can be held again the following year; with better accommodation and transportation for the participants comfort.
